Exposure Samsung skips OLED and directly enters QLED

Samsung Electronics is planning a medium- and long-term roadmap for next-generation TVs. According to South Korean media reports, Samsung will skip OLED TV and directly enter OLED. Samsung's current main product is Quantum Dot TV. Its strategy is to continue to develop quantum dot TVs while preparing for the commercialization of QLED technology. OLED has some defects, such as longevity, aging, and high manufacturing costs, so Samsung decided to skip OLED directly.

Samsung Electronics and industry sources recently revealed that the Samsung VD (Video Display) business unit is adjusting the roadmap for next-generation TVs, which will be finalized next month, and then Samsung will share the roadmap internally.

Since 2006, the TV sold by Samsung TV has been ranked first in the world. So far, Samsung has led the market through LED, 3D, smart, quantum dot concept TV. This year, Samsung has not shown any concept TV, it continues to use SUHD TV as it did last year. LG Electronics is the second largest TV manufacturer in the world, and it is promoting the development of OLED TV. The industry wants to know how Samsung Electronics responds.

Last year, Samsung Group conducted a management evaluation of Samsung Electronics' VD business unit, which has focused on QLED. They hope that QLED can help the company stay ahead in the next-generation TV market. The focus of Samsung's strategy is: VD business unit will skip OLED TV after quantum dot TV and directly enter QLED TV. Many years ago, Samsung developed OLED TVs internally and evaluated them. In the end, Samsung believes that some problems are difficult to solve, such as service life, aging and other problems caused by organic materials. In fact, the high manufacturing cost of OLED units is a major weakness.

“Although we have been developing OLED technology and paying attention to this technology, the technology used in large products still has the problem of long life and high production cost because it uses organic materials.” A senior executive said, “ The Samsung VD business unit is developing a roadmap for next-generation TVs. The executive added that after quantum dot TV, Samsung decided to go directly to QLED TV because technology is growing rapidly.

QLEDs use quantum dots of 2 to 10 nanometers. Like OLEDs, they also emit light without the need for backlight elements. Quantum dots are only one-hundredth of the thickness of the hair, and the different colors are different. Because of the inorganic materials used, QLEDs are more durable than OLEDs, which use organic materials. QLEDs are less expensive, with better clarity and light stability. In addition, due to the superior color performance of QLED single pixels, there is an advantage in implementing HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, and HDR has become the focus of TV quality competition.

In the next two to three years, Samsung's focus will still be on SUHD TV, which uses a quantum dot display and will continue to improve the level of QLED technology to meet commercial requirements. It is estimated that the new QLED TV will be launched in 2019.
