Fuji Heavy Industries has equipped the new Forester, which was partially improved in October 2015, with a system that continuously adjusts the range of LED headlights from high beam to low beam (Figure 1). It features a rotating visor that allows you to adjust the exposure range at will.

The two-lamp type consisting of a high beam (halogen) and a low beam (HID) was changed to an LED single lamp.
The method of detecting the front vehicle (front and opposite vehicles) and automatically switching the LED headlights to the high beam and low beam is roughly classified into "module control type" and "shading type". The former module control mode realizes a plurality of light distribution modes by separately controlling a plurality of LED light sources (modules). The principle of this method is to detect the taillights of the preceding vehicle and the headlights of the opposite vehicle through the on-board camera, and turn off the specific modules in the plurality of modules to avoid illuminating the front vehicle with the high beam (table).
The latter visor uses a visor to switch between high beam and low beam. One method is to make the mechanical movement of the visor down and switch the high beam and the low beam in two steps. Another method is to use multiple visors to switch between multiple gears. These methods can only shield the direction of the vehicle in front and illuminate the high beam in other directions. Since the vehicle can be driven by the high beam, the driver of the preceding vehicle will not be dazzled, and the visibility at night is high.
Use a motor to drive the visor
The system used by Fuji Heavy Industries in the LED lights of the new Foresters is also a visor method. However, unlike the previous systems using visors, the motor is used to drive the visor movement, and the high beam to the low beam can be continuously switched. The system was developed based on the "single-lamp high-performance projector" from Otaru Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Fig. 2). The company's projectors can achieve a variety of light distribution modes by adjusting the visor in the shading unit. The headlights of the new forester changed the two-shift type of the visor from up and down to a motor-driven, gearless rotary. When the vehicle in front is detected, the high beam is switched. When the current vehicle is close to the vehicle, the illumination range is continuously adjusted according to the distance of the vehicle, and the high beam of the driver of the preceding vehicle can be avoided (Fig. 3).

When detecting the vehicle ahead, the color stereo camera of Fuji Heavy Industries' safe driving assistance system "EyeSight ver.3" is used. If it is a vehicle that is driving in front, it will be judged mainly based on the red color of the taillights. If it is a vehicle traveling on the opposite side, it will be judged mainly based on the brightness of the headlights. In order to distinguish the lamp of the preceding vehicle from the reflector of the roadside, in addition to the color and brightness information of the lamp, the distance information with the object is used. According to Fuji Heavy Industries, if it is a flat straight road, it can detect vehicles in front of 700 to 800 meters.
The system uses EyeSight's ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to control the motor and drive the visor movement based on the information obtained from the stereo camera. According to Fuji Heavy Industries, in order to avoid affecting other functions of EyeSight ver.3, the information used in motor control is reduced to a minimum, including the color and brightness of the lights, and the distance from the object.
It also has the function of driving the optical axis along the turning direction
Moreover, the new Forester's headlights are also equipped with a "steering wheel linkage headlight system (SRH)" that can drive the vehicle's light axis along the direction of the turn. The steering angle of the steering wheel is detected by a steering angle sensor mounted on the steering wheel, and the angle of the driving optical axis is determined based on the numerical value and the speed data and the like. A dedicated ECU is used to control the motor that drives the optical axis.
However, if a vehicle suddenly appears in front of a sharp turn or the like, the risk of illuminating the high beam to the driver of the opposite vehicle increases. According to Fuji Heavy Industries, it is difficult to completely avoid this situation if you use a stereo camera to control it. Therefore, the headlights of the new forester are also equipped with the function of forcibly switching from high beam to low beam when the steering angle of the steering wheel exceeds a certain value. Thereby, the safety at night can be further improved.
In addition, the headlights of the previous generation foresters are double-lamp type, the low beam is HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamp, and the high beam is halogen lamp. The new car changed it to a single-lamp LED. The reason for the person in charge of the development is that "the eyes are prominent in the appearance".
The product utilizes four LED components and a drive module to form a single-lamp unit.
