IDC: AMD Breaks 20% in Its First Quarter Share

IDC: AMD Breaks 20% in Its First Quarter Share The market adjustment agency IDC also announced a statistical report on the global PC microprocessor market in the second quarter of 2011. It also shows that AMD has obtained a lot of shares, again exceeding 20%.

In the second quarter of this year, global PC microprocessor shipments decreased by 2.9% from the previous quarter and slightly increased by 0.6% year-on-year. In terms of revenue, the entire market reached US$9.49 billion, a decrease of 4.0% from the previous quarter and a year-on-year increase of 5.4%.

Shane Rau, IDC's semiconductor business analyst, commented: “Because there was one more calendar week, the first quarter of 2011 was the best start over the years, so the quarter-on-quarter changes were all expected. If you exclude that extra week, the first The performance in the second quarter is actually slightly better."

On the vendor side, Intel and AMD are all pushing for a new platform that integrates the graphics core. The former is Sandy Bridge, and the latter is the Fusion APU. IDC's data shows that more than 60% of processors shipped in the second quarter are of this type.

In the second quarter, Intel’s market share was 79.3%. Compared with the first quarter, it lost 1.5 percentage points. AMD raised itself to 20.4%, and VIA remained at 0.3%.

The lack of performance in the notebook mobile market is a key reason for Intel's overall share decline. Here, Intel was robbed of a 1.9 percentage point share, of which 1.8 were attributed to AMD and 0.1 were attributed to VIA. Now the three companies hold 84.4%, 15.2% and 0.4% respectively.

Intel also lost 1.5 percentage points on the desktop market, gaining 70.9%, and AMD has reached 28.9%.

As for the server, Intel is still continuing its strategy of attacking cities. It has occupied a near-monopoly position of 94.5%, which is 0.6% more than in the first quarter. AMD has therefore left only 5.5% of the region.

Due to the poor economic situation in the developed countries, IDC has lowered the year-on-year growth of global microprocessor shipments in 2011, which was 10.3% before, and now it is reduced to 9.3%.
