Wolfson mobile phone stereo codec

Wolfson has introduced a stereo audio codec (CODEC) for multimedia handsets and similar applications that combines high-quality audio performance with extended mixing capabilities while achieving low power consumption.

Wolfson WM8983 can give mobile phones a flexible, new application model. These modes include listening to MP3 or FM radio without affecting the normal use of the phone, and allowing audio playback while the call is in progress. Other modes include karaoke during voice calls, full-mix headphones and I2S recording.

Wolfson's WM8983 high-resolution stereo audio codec includes a dedicated input and output audio mixer and output driver with audio loopback for high-fidelity recording, two speaker amplifiers, output drivers for speakers, headphones and Differential or stereo output. This product eliminates the need for separate speakers and headphone amplifiers, reducing the number of components and the space required for the chip. The high output bridged load (BTL) speaker driver enables 1 watt output power drive on 8 ohm BTL speakers, while the headphone driver supports "capless" operation for greater distance and cost savings.

Wolfson's mixed-signal technology also enables digital signal processing on-chip, adding innovative features to high-fidelity audio applications on new mobile devices. By integrating a 5-band equalizer, 3D sound enhancement, automatic level control and record limiter, the on-chip digital signal processor (DSP) reduces the need for MIPS for the device's main multimedia processor, thereby improving performance and reducing totals. Power consumption.

These digital signal processing functions enable MP3 music or MPEG4 movies to be played on mobile phones only by enabling the multimedia processor and audio codec, saving power consumption and extending battery life. The WM8983 digital audio interface operates in active or slave mode, and an integrated phase-locked loop supports flexible clocking schemes, fully supporting A-law and μ-law companding.

The chip features a digital wind noise filter and an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter that can be used as a programmable notch filter. This enables fixed frequency noise reduction to improve speech and audio performance. Additional power boosting and power circuitry reduces tower noise and simplicity in the auditory range.

The on-chip digital-to-analog converter (DAC) performance is 98 signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and –84 dB total harmonic distortion (THD), while the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) performance is 95 dB SNR and – 84 dB THD. To save power, the digital core can operate at a minimum of 1.71V. The analog supply voltage range for the WM8983 is from 2.5V to 3.3V. The speaker power supply can operate at voltages up to 5V, which increases the speaker's output power. Additional power management controls allow different parts of the chip to be powered down by software control to reduce power, giving designers more options for optimizing the battery life of the finished product.

Price and applicability
The WM8983 is available now in a 5x5 32-pin QFN package. The purchase price is priced at $2.85 per piece for 10,000 pieces.
