On March 8, US Eastern Time, Lyft announced that it will test its own self-driving car at GoMentum StaTIon, a 5,000-acre experimental site in Concord, California.
It is reported that all the vehicles involved in the test were independently designed and developed by the Lyft internal team. This test may become an important turning point for Lyft, the second largest car sharing service company in the United States.
According to Lei Feng.com, Lyft does not currently provide the latest information on autonomous car testing, but only provides two photos to let people guess the approximate type of technology used.
Although Lyft is the second-largest network car platform in the United States, it is far behind the rival Uber in scale, and the latter has tested autonomous vehicles on highways in multiple cities.
For a time, Lyft's market position was to provide rental sharing services for other companies' autonomous vehicles, and has already worked with leading manufacturers such as Waymo, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, NuTonomy, ApTIv and Drive.ai.
Just last July, Lyft announced that it was investing in its own autonomous driving hardware and software.
"By partnering with GoMentum StaTIon, we are able to test our automated driving systems in a secure facility and advance our technology in an efficient manner," said Luc Vincent, vice president of engineering at Lyft, and GoMentum in a partnership statement.
GoMentum StaTIon is one of 10 autopilot vehicle test sites officially designated by the US Department of Transportation in 2017 to help shape future policies and testing processes. Currently, both Honda and Toyota are testing self-driving cars here.
In addition, GoMentum Station has about 20 miles of roads, providing a large number of barracks and buildings to simulate the urban environment. Here, companies can take security tests away from competitors' peeping.
