Ido Sarig, Vice President and General Manager of Wind River IoT Solutions Group
The Internet of Things (IoT) provides an excellent opportunity to increase business efficiency, create new revenue streams, reduce environmental impact, and increase customer satisfaction. However, in most cases we have not fully realized this potential. Until now, most IoT solutions have been built from the ground up at a high level of customization, which has increased the cost and complexity of development and delayed many potential customers to start innovative projects.
To achieve widespread adoption of the Internet of Things, developers need an environment that frees them from the infrastructure of the solution. Such platforms will allow them to concentrate on optimizing unique features to make the solution available faster and at lower cost.
In this article we will describe how Wind River provides this foundation through its Wind River Edge Management System. We will explain how this cloud-based middleware can help developers build a vertical specific IoT that integrates enterprise IT systems and edge devices. We will also discuss its ability to implement powerful deterministic features in small, low-power devices, as well as provide important security and management capabilities.
Finally, we will describe how Wind River integrates the Edge Management System into a series of IoT gateways by working with the Intel® Internet of Things Solutions Alliance. With 250+ global partner companies, the alliance provides scalable interoperable solutions that accelerate smart device deployment and end-to-end analysis. Alliance members work closely with Intel and each other to innovate the latest technologies and help developers provide the earliest listed IoT solutions. IoT Platform Requirements
To securely obtain data from the edge to the cloud in real time, the IoT platform must have three main functions:
• Telemetry and Analysis for Remote Data Capture – The basic functionality for implementing business information and innovating business models. The ability to monitor the health of sensors and systems is also important to improve system reliability and reduce operating expenses.
• Remote management reduces costs by reducing service calls and maximizing uptime. It also helps to create rule-based intelligence systems - such as allowing remote operators to change local response thresholds.
• Devices to the cloud must have built-in security. This type of security must begin with a trusted boot and go through the chain of trust and have the means to protect the rest and motion data.
The cost, complexity, and development time required to implement these features is a challenge for many businesses. The root cause of many of these challenges is the lack of standardization. In the past, IoT solutions were highly customized to specific vertical applications and did not scale well to other markets. As a result, many companies encounter huge obstacles and heavy ongoing maintenance burdens when creating their own IoT technologies.
Wind River Edge Management System
Wind River Edge Management System is designed to break these barriers and provide a horizontal platform that can connect various market devices. The pre-integrated technology stack extends from devices to the cloud through various components, including cloud-based middleware stacks, smart device agents, and development tools (Figure 1).
Figure 1. The Wind River Edge Management System is centered on a cloud-based middleware stack.
Wind River hosts and leverages the Cloud Middleware provided by the Platform as a Service (PaaS) model to act as a central console to monitor and exchange data with edge devices. As shown in Figure 2, middleware includes scripts and web service APIs that connect application services. Middleware has been verified to use big data and corporate IT systems immediately, including systems from coalition partners Microsoft and Oracle. Middleware also joins the Internet of Things data model and rules engine to manage data. These features help developers quickly build systems that can capture business intelligence from rich IoT data.
Figure 2. Wind River Edge Management System provides developers with rich built-in capabilities.
Unlike existing IT-oriented solutions, the Edge Management System provides a management plane in addition to the data plane. The management plane focuses on activities such as equipment onboard, supply, and life cycle management. It also allows technicians to remotely access the device and reset the device if something goes wrong. The data plane collects and transmits data from the edge, such as sensor data for analysis and metadata used to monitor the health of the device.
The Edge Management System device proxy provides a RESTful API (application programming interface that conforms to the state transfer). These APIs implement features such as data capture, configuration, file transfer, and rules engines. Developers can use these APIs to quickly create vertical specific IoT solutions and integrate disparate enterprise IT systems.
Agents integrate with Wind River Linux and Wind River VxWorks to enable seamless interaction with many edge devices using these operating systems (OSs). These integrations help develop vertical specific IoT solutions for industrial, transportation, energy, and other markets. Operating system support also helps developers create powerful, deterministic features in resource-constrained devices without compromising performance, reliability, or security. The agent is also integrated with the Intel® IoT Gateway, a family of all-inclusive gateways that combine pre-integrated and pre-verified hardware and software to accelerate development. We will discuss these gateways later in this article.
Overall, the Edge Management System provides a stable platform for IoT deployment. As shown in Figure 3, the solution helps developers:
• Connectivity – Edge Management System's agent and protocol support allows it to intelligently communicate with interconnected devices, cutting configuration and support costs. This connectivity allows the middleware to connect the edge system to the cloud, efficiently collect, process, transform machine and sensor data and transfer the data to a remote server.
• Ensure security – The Edge Management System uses SSL encrypted channels to communicate with edge devices to hide data from unauthorized parties and protect the data in motion. Access to data at rest uses role-based access control protection, which enhances user roles and defines and restricts access to data and system functions to appropriate designated roles. Edge Management System tightly integrates the security features of the Intel IoT Gateway – such as whitelisting and integrity monitoring, to ensure secure software updates without threatening device-side security capabilities. Advanced technology and operational expertise ensure secure and scalable on-demand infrastructure. End-to-end customizable security policies cover all layers, including network, application, user, and data security. Security package compatibility maintenance ensures large-scale secure deployment of IoT devices.
• Management – The Edge Management System's rules engine and its data and message processing capabilities allow rule-based operations based on analysis of data received from edge devices. Device management capabilities include the ability to configure, monitor, and manage remote devices. System management, monitoring, and performance tuning tools allow IoT edge devices to be remotely provisioned, configured, and managed as cloud services.
• Build – Pre-integrated application development support integrates machine data and message-driven reads, locations, and alarms into systems and applications. Application scalability provides flexible handling of unique business requirements in rapidly changing environments.

All-inclusive gateway
As previously mentioned, the Edge Management System integrates Intel IoT gateways. These gateways bring together the underlying hardware, software, and interfaces needed to connect edge devices to the cloud. The gateway includes Wind River* Intelligent Device Platform* (IDP) XT, a set of software, hardware drivers, libraries, and software development environments that support rapid application development and field deployment (Figure 4). The stack also includes McAfee Embedded Control, which enhances resilience through dynamic whitelisting and change control. (McAfee is a member of the alliance.)
Figure 4. The Intel® IoT Gateway provides a comprehensive software stack.
Alliance members provide a wide range of gateways with a variety of computing and I/O options to meet specific vertical application requirements. Processors range from the 1.5 W (typical) Intel® Quark® SoC X1000 series to the quad-core Intel® AtomTM processor E3800 product family with high scalability. The Intel Quark SoC X1000 series is a good choice for headless applications with stringent physical and thermal limitations, such as connecting traditional factory equipment. The SoC provides a rich set of I/Os for connecting sensors and secure security through the secure boot on-chip ROM intelligence on many SKUs.
The Intel Atom processor E3800 product line excels in applications that require more performance and richer features. For example, the processor has a Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSSE3), which is important for processing sensor and instrument data and performing local analysis. In addition, this processor family also supports Intel® Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (Intel® AES-NI) for data encryption and Secure Boot for trusted boot.
Joining the Intel IoT Gateway of the Wind River Edge Management System provides a platform for supporting applications from cloud-managed smart edge solutions. Developers can begin development immediately, using all of the data management and device management capabilities of the Edge Management System, as well as pre-integrated and validated software stacks provided with the Intel IoT Gateway.
