The State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the National Standardization Administration approved the issuance of six national recommended standards for motor vehicle electronic identification, which was officially implemented on July 1, 2018. The new regulations stipulate that all new motor vehicles in 2018 are required to leave a microwave window for the electronic license plate at the position of the front windshield.

What is an electronic license plate?

It is equipped with a radio frequency identification (RFID) electronic license plate label on the motor vehicle, and the vehicle and the owner's related information is entered into the label. Simply put, an electronic license plate is equivalent to a person's "second-generation ID card", which allows the motor vehicle to have legal identity information and has the function of "machine-readable + video-reading".

Based on RF RFID technology, the electronic license plate has a very successful management experience of 100,000 high-speed vehicles in the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore. Although as early as 2013, the Ministry of Public Security of China signed an agreement with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to promote the application of RFID in the field of public safety, and carried out a demonstration application in Wuxi in early 2015. However, due to the long-term non-mandatory regulations, car owners have privacy issues. Subjective installation intentions are not strong, resulting in little effect on popularization. Until December 29 last year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the National Standardization Administration approved the release of six national recommended standards for motor vehicle electronic identification (see Table 1), which stipulated that 2018 new factory vehicles should be in the front. At present, electronic license plates contain less information, but there is potential for growth.

At present, the electronic logo promoted in China is only used to “identify the identity of motor vehicles”, and the amount of information stored therein is small (only the license plate number, model, owner information, etc.), and the purpose is more convenient for the vehicle management office. Management and collection of certain fees (such as the upcoming "congestion fee"). However, in combination with the cooperation layout of various enterprises and governments around electronic identification in recent years (see Table 2), the foreseeable trend is that the functions of future automotive electronic license plates will be gradually enriched, for example, to achieve precise positioning of themselves and other vehicles, Exchange of information with the car (such as steering, braking, etc.) to provide effective information to the control layer and help them make driving decisions.
