Domestic robots are struggling to narrow the technological gap

: Although the gap between the core technology and core components and the international level is still not small, but with a huge market advantage, Chinese robotics companies are struggling to narrow this gap, and some of the results have begun to show.

In early April, the domestic robotics company Xinsong brought several robots to the biennial International Automation and Robotics Exhibition in the United States and displayed to the world’s robot peers cutting-edge technologies made in China.

“Overseas technology in the field of industrial robots has almost developed. It is only a matter of time before Chinese companies catch up with them.” Xinsong Robot’s head, Qu Daokui, said confidently before being interviewed by reporters.

Back three years ago, few Chinese companies have the ability to take their own robotic products to such occasions.

In fact, in the past two years, China has been catching up with the research and development of industrial robots and has achieved certain results. Especially in the field of individual core parts and components, companies can already independently research and develop mass production.

However, it is not easy to reach the world advanced level in the short term, especially in terms of technology, compared with European and American countries, domestic products are still difficult to catch up within three to five years. This point has become a consensus in the field of domestic robots. The optimistic view is that there is at least a 10-year gap.

As a listed company, Zhang Wei, deputy general manager of Everett Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd., said in an interview with reporters that in 2016, domestically produced products accounted for 12% to 15% of domestic six-axis high-end robots. He predicted that within 5 to 10 years, the share of domestic brands could rise to 30%. "If it can be done, it is already a very remarkable achievement."

Over the years, the huge technological gap has made it difficult for the robotics industry to develop in China. Even if China has become the world's largest robot application and consumer market for many years, but in addition to the price, the independent brand products have almost no advantage in the short-term competition in the market.

The backwardness of domestic robots in terms of technology is reflected in many aspects. From the point of view of the domestic market alone, especially in the high-end products such as automobiles, almost all of them are foreign products. Even if some enterprises boldly use domestic products, their core components and technologies are mostly from abroad. Data shows that more than 80% of the domestic robot market is occupied by foreign brands, and core components are almost monopolized by foreign brands.

A late start

"China's robotic industry will take a step forward and face the mature markets, products and technologies of the developed countries. If there is no policy support, it will be very difficult," Zhang said.

In order to catch up as quickly as possible, relevant departments such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology have been making active efforts to give more policy support and guidance, especially in resolving common technologies and basic research. However, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering stated that there are many disciplines involved in robot R&D, and there are very high requirements for talents, scientific research, etc., and it is difficult to accomplish them overnight. This is precisely the weakest point in China's development of the robot industry.

There are many factors that contribute to the current situation, mainly due to the late start of the development of industrial robots in China. When foreign technology has been very mature, we have only begun to pay attention to it from the government to the enterprise, and we have been left behind at the start.

Take the enterprise as an example. Currently, the well-known robotics companies in the international market, including the four major families of Kuka, Fanuc, Yaskawa, and ABB, have decades of R&D and production history, and Yasukawa has exceeded 100 years.

According to Zhang Jian, foreign companies have received government support when they started.
