Recently, Meta and pmdtechnologies (PMD) jointly announced that the Meta2 development kit will integrate PMD's depth sensing technology to increase the environmental sensing and non-tactile interaction experience.
The AR Head Start Meta2 Development Kit has been shipping since December of last year. According to PMD, Meta's philosophy is to bring users AR products that can be deeply perceived, freely expressed, and optimally productive, thereby improving people's work, communication, and collaboration. And this concept coincides with PMD, PMD is also committed to providing the smallest, most solid, the most sophisticated depth sensing technology for mobile or wearable devices.
Headquartered in Siegen, Germany, PMD is a leading company in 3D chip technology. It mainly manufactures 3D chips based on Time-of-Flight (TOF) technology (such as the commercial version of PMD PhotonICs® 19k-S3 chip). Haptic gesture recognition for human-machine interface interactions and augmented reality applications can be implemented using PMD's TOF chip technology and depth camera prototypes.
PMD is also a deep sensing partner for the Google Project Tango project. In April of last year, when President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended Hannover Industrial Fair, Barack Obama praised him after experiencing the VR headset with PMD integrated depth sensor. In addition, ASUS Zenfone AR smartphones that also support Google Tango and Daydream are also using PMD's depth sensing technology.
