The Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands has developed a new Li-Fi system that uses infrared light to transmit data at speeds of up to 40 Gbit/s. Using infrared light to build a wireless network can increase the speed of the network, which is 100 times faster than existing systems.
Researchers have found a new way to use a central "optical antenna" to send light of different wavelengths to wireless devices, so that when different devices compete for network signals, the network will not be congested. We call this kind of optical system "Li-Fi", and it is safer to transmit with this technology. The researchers pointed out that Li-Fi will be put into use within five years.
The new system was developed by the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and can transmit more than 40 Gbit/s per light. The researchers explained that direct light must be obtained from the fiber when using the new system. Since there are no moving components, the system does not require maintenance and does not require electricity.
When in use, we installed several optical antennas in a given area, each with a pair of gratings that allow the light to be emitted at different wavelengths and angles. When you walk with your phone or tablet, if the device leaves a direct light, the other will take over. The direct direction of the light can be changed by adjusting the wavelength.
Based on radio signals, we can use optical networks to track the exact location of wireless devices. If you want to add more devices, you only need to assign the same antenna to different wavelengths. In other words, the device does not share bandwidth, the connection is faster, and it is not interfered by the neighbor's network.
The frequency of existing wifi network radio signals is either 2.5 GHz or 5 GHz, and the new network uses infrared light with a wavelength of about 1500 nm or more. The researchers pointed out that the frequency of light can be higher, up to 200THz, and the bandwidth will be much higher.
The researchers confirmed by experiments that the network speed can reach 42.8 Gbit/s at a distance of 2.5 meters. Everyone knows that this speed is crazy. In the Netherlands, the network averages only 17.6 Mbit/s. At present, the best system can only reach 300Mbit/s. In other words, the Li-Fi network is 100 times faster than the wifi network.
But so far researchers have only used light to download data, if the data is still used to upload data, after all, the upload bandwidth requirements are not high.
In the next five years, Li-Fi will be put into use, which may be used by consumer devices, such as video monitors, notebooks, and tablets.
